Pain

After a longer-than-usual break for vacation, we resume with one of my all-time favorites:
la douleur = pain. E.g.
j'ai des douleurs dans le dos = to have a backache
avoir les premières douleurs = to go into labor
tu vas comprendre ta douleur! = you'll understand the meaning of suffering!
douloureux / douloureuse = painful
la douloureuse (literally "the painful one") = the bill

Vol

un vol = a flight / a theft
E.g.
il a pris un vol pour Paris = he took a flight to Paris
il a commis un vol = he committed a theft / robbery
C'est du vol! = It's a racket!

un voleur / une voleuse = a thief

Which leads me to the story of the day, brought to you by southwestern France.

Elysées

Les Champs-Élysées (literally "Elysian fields") is a famous avenue in Paris, nicknamed La plus belle avenue du monde ("The most beautiful avenue in the world"), that runs from Place de la Concorde (with its obelisk) to Place Charles de Gaulle (where the Arc de triomphe is located). It is famous for its cinemas, luxury shops and cafes.

Not far from it is the the Palais de l'Élysée ("Elysian palace"), also simply called l'Elysée, which is the official residence of the president of France.

Déjà vu

Literally, déjà-vu means "already seen" (which, as I was pointed out, opens the door to a lot of French jokes for this upcoming movie)

une impression de déjà-vu = a feeling of déjà vu

Gage

un gage (pronounced gaj) =

1. a security / surety, e.g. je te laisse ma montre en gage = I'm leaving you my watch as security
2. a pledge, e.g. donner des gages d'amitié = pledging friendship
3. finally, in games, a forfeit, e.g. faire son gage = to pay one's forfeit
