un petit ami / une petite amie = a boyfriend / a grilfriend ("a small friend" ?)

un copain / une copine = a friend, except when used with a possessive when it takes the meaning of boyfriend / girlfriend e.g. mon copain / ma copine - my boyfriend / my girlfirend
